ROB JONES
JAPANESE TEXTILES ARTIST - DESIGNER MAKER - TEACHER

Rob Jones from Romor Designs indigo dyed Shibori art quilt was exhibited at the Embassy of Japan from May 11th thru September 29th 2023.

Rob has just returned from Japan, where he was visiting new places and then taking this year’s group of eager students to study Shibori resist and Katagami stencilling with indigo dyeing at Bryan Whitehead’s silk farmhouse in the mountains to the West of Tokyo. So exciting!

ART

My artwork is highly colourful and ordered. It focusses on the juxtaposition of brightly coloured Kogin embroidery threads in structured forms.

Whilst I make my own designs and patterns, I am also available for commissions. Please contact rob@romordesigns.com for more information.

TEACHING

A large part of my practice is sharing my skills and knowledge of Japanese textiles crafts through teaching Indigo dyeing, Shibori resist, Katagami stencilling, Sashiko and Kogin embroidery and Boro inspired mending.

I am passionate about Japanese textiles crafts and I love to inspire students to take up the skills that I teach.

My Sashiko embroidery and Boro inspired mending work was featured on the Great British Sewing Bee semi-final in 2022

ARTIST STATEMENT

My inspiration comes from the traditional patterns found in Japanese textiles, which are often very structured and regimented. My process is to learn new techniques through studying and replicating ancient patterns and then break and re-order them into new forms. I work mostly with indigo for the richness and variety of its blues and the way it creates randomness within structure. My latest passion is Kogin counted thread Sashiko embroidery which I am reconstructing into brightly coloured and richly hand stitched framed artwork.
